Did that Monkey in Costa Rica Just Wink At Me?

Playing for the Camera in Costa Rica
Playing for the Camera

Did that Monkey  in Costa Rica just wink at me? When I was a kid, I used to play monkeys with my best friend Marguerite.

We’d make believe we were running around the forest swinging from trees, scratching ourselves.

Scratching under our arms, making monkey sounds, scratching our noses. Did you ever have fun playing monkeys?

Maybe that’s why I always wanted to watch monkeys doing their thing, in their own habitat and Costa Rica provides you with this experience.

Today, when rafting down the Corbihi River in Costa Rica we came across monkeys high in the trees.

Corbihi River, Costa Rica
Oh look, the guide said, pointing to a tree just ahead of us. See the monkeys?

Where, where everyone shouted??? Up ahead, he answered.

Oh yeah, I see them called out one of the members of the group.

And then in unison everyone said Yeah, there they are and lifting cameras to faces, everyone was clicking away.

The monkeys were behaving differently than Marguerite and I. They were hanging upside down watching us, watching them as we went rafting past them, our cameras snapping.

Since I was in the front of the raft, trying to protect my camera from the splashing water, my clicking was s l o w to come.

Unfortunately, I missed some of the best #&*$#%

Here are 4 tips for always being prepared for that next shot, whether on land or sea….

  1. Take the shot…don’t hesitate. You can always hit the delete later.

  1. Use automatic settings. Depending on your camera, you probably have a number of pre-exposures on your camera. Experiment before the trip.

  1. Set your camera to automatically take multiple shots, if you have the capacity. You can always delete those that do not come out good.
  2. 4. Purchase a waterproof camera bag that flips open easily or use a zip lock bag if you are going to be on the water. (B& H is always a good place to purchase anything for photography or electronics www.bhphotovideo.com)

And then, you won’t miss monkeysFrog in Costa Rica

or frogs that look like this
.

Isn’t he a beauty!

And there were birds singing to us all the way down the river. The sun was hot, the pineapple was cold and delicious and the river, relatively calm. It was a very peaceful day with lots to see and the monkeys, although a very brief encounter, were so very cute. Marguerite would have loved them.

Zip Lining Adventure in Costa Rica

Relaxing before going zip lining

I felt peaceful, relaxed and decided a really pleasant way to see Guanacaste, Costa Rica this beautiful, relaxing place with blue skies, lush green trees and hanging fruits would be through a zip lining adventure.

For those of you who may have never heard of this, zip lining is a cable line between two places that allows you to soar above the landscape capturing a panoramic view of the world around you.

I was looking forward to zip lining, especially in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Those who travelled here before me, and there have been many, said it was fun! I like fun!

I was geared up and ready to go, but then…with that first step onto the zip line platform my knees got weak and they began to shake. A first for me.

OMG, that zip line is so flippin’ long. I can’t see the end.

Prior to standing in the zip line queue, I felt very excited. We had just had a glove lesson and everyone was discussing the  lesson to make sure we remembered how to control the speed of the cable line.  This is very important.

Lesson on Zip Lining
Lesson on Zip Lining

When I was a kid, I had no fear of heights. I grew up in an apartment building, lived four flights up, and used to sit on the windowsill with my feet dangling outside, chatting with my girlfriend who lived across the alley.

Over the years, I have developed a “slight” fear of heights, I don’t know why because nothing ever happened. I don’t experience this fear all of the time, never when I anticipate an adventure that involves a height.  But…when I am actually about to attempt something that involves heights, like zip lining, I sometimes become frightened. Maybe as we acquire wisdom over the years, fears develop.

But I will not to allow fear to dictate how I live.

So, after a workshop in Costa Rica when my friend Daphne said let’s go zip lining, I was in and looking forward to the experience.

I was geared up and ready to go, but then…

Zip lining for infinity?
Does this zip line ever end?

with that first step up onto the zip line platform my knees got weak and they began to shake.

OMG, that zip line is so flippin’ long. I can’t see the end.  [Read more…]
